Inter and AC Milan would seriously consider moving their plans for a new stadium to Sesto San Giovanni as the delays to approval on building a new stadium in the city of Milan continue to mount.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Rossoneri in particular are in a hurry as the continued uncertainty makes it seem unlikely that the clubs can stick to their timelines.

Inter and Milan have been hoping to start construction on a new stadium to replace the San Siro during the second half of 2024, and to move into the stadium by the start of the 2027-28 season.

At present, this seems unrealistic given that there is still anything but a guarantee that approval from the City Council will be forthcoming.

The Council gave the teams a number of requested changes to their plans based on the public debate which concluded in November.

These requests include increasing capacity to 70,000, not raising ticket prices, and adding more green space to the area where the stadium will be built.

It remains to be seen how the clubs will respond to these requests, and it is far from certain that the approval of the council will arrive towards the end of this month.

Meanwhile, and potentially more worryingly, there is an ongoing attempt to attain an injunction on tearing down the San Siro.

If such an injunction is to be granted, then Inter and Milan’s plans will become plainly impossible, as there would be no other area in which to build a new stadium.

Accordingly, the clubs continue to be very apprehensive about the future considering they know that their plans could be upended by an injunction, so they have never stopped considering the option of moving plans to Sesto San Giovanni.

According to the Gazzetta, the Rossoneri would be more inclined towards this option, as they have always had it in mind as a backup plan.

Thusly, Milan could well decide to move forward at Sesto and build a separate stadium from Inter, although according to the Gazzetta, Nerazzurri owners Suning have never shown any sort of inclination to go it alone and want to build along with their neighbours and city rivals.
