Inter and AC Milan will both be looking to use next week’s Supercoppa Italiana match as an opportunity to retain their momentum after a difficult week.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who report that both the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri will be looking to use next Wednesday’s match to prove that they aren’t being held back by recent setbacks.
Inter suffered a damaging blow in Serie A in the form of a draw away to Monza last weekend, with the Brianzoli’s equalizer only coming in stoppage time.
Milan suffered an even more dramatic collapse, as they let a 2-0 lead slip very late on against Roma.
If either side looked to use the Coppa Italia in midweek to recover from these slip-ups, they will have been disappointed.
Inter needed extra time to overcome Serie B opposition Parma after an uninspiring performance, whilst for their city rivals it was even worse as the Rossoneri were eliminated from the competition by Torino during extra time despite having had a man-advantage for nearly half of the match.
Clearly, neither of the two Milan teams head into Wednesday’s Supercoppa match with their confidence high.
With a gruelling fixture list to come in the following months, and both teams still targeting a Serie A title comeback as well as preparing for the Champions League round of sixteen, both will want to shake off this malaise as soon as they possibly can.
Winning the Supercoppa, especially doing so with a convincing performance, would be a perfect way to do exactly that.
Only one of the two city rivals can do so, however, and whichever team loses risks having their misery deepened.
