Inter’s joy at securing a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona in Serie A yesterday was amplified by disappointing results for rivals AC Milan and Juventus.
As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Corriere della Sera, the Nerazzurri can be satisfied with their victory as it allowed them to close the gap on both Juventus and Milan, as they moved level with the former and to within a point of the latter.
Milan were only able to draw 2-2 against Lecce, after coming from two goals down, whilst Juventus were thrashed 5-1 at the hands of Napoli on Friday evening.
Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza to hand Inter victory, and whilst they were unconvincing at times, the win gives them the faintest of hopes of being the team to haul leaders Napoli back.
Inter are the only side to have beaten Napoli in Serie A this term, with a 1-0 win at the start of January, and are the last of the three chasing teams to face the Partenopei again this season, when they travel to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on 21 May.
Whilst the Nerazzurri struggled to a draw against Monza after their win over Napoli, it is argued that another high-profile match will help them to kick back into gear, with the Supercoppa Italiana against Milan coming up on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Martinez was also praised for his impact over winter, with the Argentina international providing six goals and two assists in his last eight starts for Inter.
