Inter midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be the Nerazzurri’s key man in the midfield battle with AC Milan in Wednesday’s Supercoppa Italiana match.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who argue that the Armenian could add the extra bit of quality and decisiveness for the Nerazzurri to overcome their city rivals.

If Mkhitaryan arrived at Inter with the expectation of being a high-quality backup option in midfield, the former Roma and Arsenal man has certainly exceeded these expectations.

With Marcelo Brozovic dealing with injuries throughout the season, Mkhitaryan has formed the first-choice midfield trio alongside Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu.

If Barella’s box-to-box qualities have always been well-known and Calhanoglu’s transformation into a classical regista has been as impressive as it’s been unexpected, it has been Mkhitaryan who has really balanced the trio.

The 33-year-old’s passing and dribbling on the left of midfield have reinforced the team structurally in possession, mirroring and complimenting Barella on the right side of the trio.

In the view of the Gazzetta, it could be Mkhitaryan who proves to be the ingredient necessary to shift the balance in midfield in Inter’s favour on the way to their first piece of silverware for the season.
