Inter and AC Milan meet in the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday evening, and the two clubs could see the match as a “lifesaver” in the middle of what has been a difficult season so far for both of them.

This is the view in yesterday’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who note the pair’s struggles in recent weeks and the potential significance of a big win in the Supercoppa.

After returning to Serie A with a bang by beating league leaders Napoli, Inter have looked like a shadow of their best.

A draw away to newly-promoted Monza in the league followed by relatively unconvincing wins over Parma and Hellas Verona in the Coppa Italia and Serie A have raised doubts about whether the Nerazzurri are in it for the long haul.

Meanwhile, things have arguably been even worse for the Rossoneri.

Milan let a 2-0 lead slip late on to drop two points against Roma, and then lost 1-0 to Torino to get dumped out of the Coppa Italia despite having a man advantage over the Granata for nearly an hour.

A 2-2 draw with Lecce deepened the sense of crisis for Milan.

Given where both of the two Milan derby rivals are at in their respective seasons, they will surely feel that something is needed to give them a real shot in the arm if they’re to pick their form up over the rest of the season.

Accordingly, the significance of Wednesday’s match will be quite high for reasons that go beyond the trophy that the two sides are playing for.
