Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that the Nerazzurri established an important place in history by beating Sampdoria in the second ever edition of the Supercoppa Italiana.
Speaking to InterTV, via FCInterNews, Zenga looked back on the significance of he and his teammates’s triumph in the 1989 edition of the Supercoppa ahead of Inter’s clash with AC Milan to win it this time around.
Inter faced off against Sampdoria in the second ever Supercoppa match in 1989, with the Nerazzurri defending Serie A champions and the Blucerchiati having won the previous campaign’s Coppa Italia.
Zenga and his team saw off the Ligurian team in a 2-0 win to get their hands on the Supercoppa on only the second ever occasion in which the trophy was given out.
From the legendary former keeper’s perspective, this was an important piece of history for the Nerazzurri, with potential continuity if the team can defend last season’s crown and win it this evening.
“It was a tough match,” Zenga looked back, “that was the Samp side with Mancini, Vialli, Vierchowod.”
“They were a formidable team.”
“The Supercoppa was still a new trophy then, in its second edition, it was played at the home of the Scudetto winner and we had just won the previous season,” the former keeper continued.
“In that era, Sampdoria also won the title at one point, and the Coppa Italia, as well as reaching a European Cup final at Wembley.”
“They were certainly one of Italy’s elite teams at that time, and by beating them and winning the Supercoppa we laid down an important marker,” he concluded.
