The format of the Supercoppa Italiana match could be expanded from a one-off match between two teams to a four-team tournament starting next season.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Lega Serie A are in talks with the Saudi organizers about the future of the competition, with the question of whether to expand the format a key theme of discussions.

This season, the Supercoppa Italiana will be contested between Inter and AC Milan, the winners of the Coppa Italia and Serie A title respectively.

This is the format that the competition has always followed in the past.

However, the Lega Serie A are in talks with the current organizers, and there is much still to be decided regarding the future of the Supercoppa.

There is no agreement with the current organizers regarding holding the competition in future seasons, whilst prospective organizers in Hungary and the United Arab Emirates are also keen to host in future seasons, whilst the competition could be held in Italy again.

Meanwhile, the talks between the Lega Serie A and the current organizers are also probing the question of whether to expand the format of the competition to a four-team tournament, similar to how the Supercopa de Espana is currently played.

The benefit of this for the Lega Serie A and participating teams would be an increase in revenues, from €12 million for the two-team format to €23 million to the four-team option according to Tuttosport.
