Inter striker Edin Dzeko feels that the Nerazzurri were able to beat city rivals AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana yesterday evening because they did not underestimate them.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, via FCInterNews, the Bosnian stressed that the Nerazzurri showed no lack of respect for the Rossoneri’s qualities and that this was the secret to their victory.

The 3-0 scoreline certainly suggested a gulf in quality between Inter and Milan on the night, whilst in truth it was not an unfair reflection of the two teams’ performances.

However, the Nerazzurri will not have had any illusions about the challenge that they were set to face going into the match, as the derby is always a special match.

Dzeko and his teammates needed to be at their best, and aware of how much effort it would take to contain the Rossoneri, and they managed to do so and build a platform to score the goals they needed to and win decisively.

“It was important to win but we had to show respect for their quality,” the Bosnian said.

“We did it and we’re happy, now we’re enjoying the win.”

“When you win the Supercoppa it means winning a trophy, but on top of that we won a derby away from home,” he continued.

“We were great from the first minute to the last.”

Of the team’s next priority, Dzeko said “Empoli, that’s it.”

“For now we’ll celebrate and then rest up, and then we’ll think about our next match.”
