Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is really starting to show that he can be a source of security and certainty in the deepest position in the midfield trio for his team.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who praise the 28-year-old for his performance on both sides of the ball in the Nerazzurri’s 3-0 win over AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana.
Earlier in the season, Calhanoglu was widely seen as having been “repurposed” into the regista position in Inter’s midfield, a temporary solution whilst Marcelo Brozovic was absent through injury.
However, the Turk was widely lauded for a string of performances of sufficient quality that the Nerazzurri hardly missed the presence of Brozovic, who had looked virtually irreplaceable for them last campaign.
Now, the Corriere argues, Inter no longer look at Calhanoglu as merely a player who can do a serviceable job at the base of midfield when he’s needed there.
The former AC Milan midfielder produced a composed display in possession and a tenacious one out of it against his former side in the Supercoppa that showed that he fully understands the demands of the role.
No longer is there to be a doubt about whether Calhanoglu will fully get it right playing in an unfamiliar position when the 28-year-old starts in the deepest position in the Nerazzurri’s midfield.
Now, the Corriere suggests, the Nerazzurri can feel a sense of certainty and security when Calhanoglu starts at the regista position, as the 28-year-old has proven that he is a reliable option in the role.
