Legendary former Inter defender Marco Materazzi feels that the one thing that Jose Mourinho ever did wrong in his time as Nerazzurri coach was leaving after just two seasons at the helm.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in the SportWeek insert in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the former defender suggested that, had the Portuguese coach stayed past the end of the 2009-10 season, he could have guided the team to even more glory.

Mourinho’s time in Milan was certainly memorable and filled with trophies, although it was also quite brief.

The Portuguese coach joined the Nerazzurri at the start of the 2008-09 season, and by the end of the following campaign he was gone.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United boss and current Roma coach certainly went out on a high note, guiding the Nerazzurri to their one and only European treble in their history.

On Materazzi’s part, there is some feeling of regret at what could have been had Mourinho decided to stay at least a little while longer to continue building a winning project.

“You never jerked us around, never belittled us,” the former defender said of Mourinho, “you told us things by looking us straight in the eye.”

“You made us feel invincible, every last one of us, and you only did one thing wrong – you left.”

“If you had stayed, who knows how much more we would have won together,” he added.
