Not many Inter players came away from yesterday’s Serie A loss to Empoli with much credit to their name, but midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu and wingback Matteo Darmian gave good accounts of themselves.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who give both of the Nerazzurri duo scores of 6.5/10 in their player ratings for the match, despite the disastrous result.
Few players were spared in the Gazzetta’s assessment of the match, with goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Nicolo Barella given 4.5/10 for very disappointing display.
Defender Milan Skriniar was awarded just 4/10 after his first half red card gave his teammates a mountain to climb.
However, the Gazzetta do find space to commend Calhanoglu for a typically composed performance in possession, coupled with a tenacity that was not shared by his teammates.
Meanwhile, wingback Darmian had to do a job first on the right flank and then shifted to the right of the back three during the second half of the match.
The 33-year-old showed his usual reliability and concentration in both roles, and made a vital goal-saving tackle even if it proved to be in vain.
