Inter wingback Matteo Darmian admitted that the team have plenty of regrets about last season’s Derby della Madonnina defeat to AC Milan in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri went into the clash in February 2022 four points clear of their city rivals with a game in hand, and led through Ivan Perisic, only for Olivier Giroud to score a brace to give Milan a 2-1 win, and they ultimately moved ahead of Inter to win the Scudetto by two points.

In an excerpt of an interview with Italian television channel DAZN to be broadcast in full next week, ahead of next Sunday’s derby, and as reported by FCInter1908.it, Darmian ruefully looked back on the defeat and felt Inter had let control slip.

“That match was strange, we had taken the lead and we couldn’t manage it. We got caught up,” the former Manchester United and Torino defender admitted.

The loss saw Milan close the gap to a point, and Inter were unable to retain the Serie A title that they had lifted under Antonio Conte in 2021, with Darmian playing a significant role after joining from Parma on loan that season.

Inter currently sit above the Rossoneri in the table by two points, but remain 10 behind league leaders Napoli.
