Roma defender Chris Smalling would only be interested in joining Inter during the summer transfer window if the Nerazzurri are to qualify for the Champions League this season.

This according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.it, who report that the 33-year-old is keen to make the switch to the Nerazzurri, but that this would be contingent upon the team qualifying for the Champions League for next season.

Smalling is one of Inter’s major targets to reinforce their defense next season.

Given that there is a high probability of needing to sign two defenders with Milan Skriniar set to depart and Stefan de Vrij also potentially leaving on a free transfer, the Englishman would represent a high-quality option to reinforce without a transfer fee.

For his part, the former Manchester United player would like to join Inter.

However, Calciomercato reports, this would be different if the Nerazzurri are to miss out on Champions League football next campaign.
