Legendary former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli believes that, like always, the Milan derby this Sunday will be a match without a real favourite to win.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the former striker also argued that Lautaro Martinez has proven that he can be the right man to be Nerazzurri captain going forward.

Inter will face off against Milan in the third derby clash of the season on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have each won one and lost one so far in the campaign.

On paper, Inter are probably the team in better form of the pair, considering that the Rossoneri have been enduring their most miserable run in a long time.

However, form often has little to do with which way the derby goes, as it is always one of the showpiece occasions in Italian football and the teams generally seem to bring something extra into it.

“We can never take anything for granted,” Altobelli said.

“The derby never has any favourites.”

The former striker went on that “Lautaro is the player who gives us certainty, and I hope he can score more goals than me in an Inter shirt.”

“He is the present and future,” Altobelli said of the Argentine, “he’s the right man for matches like this.”

“I would like to see him wearing the armband from now on.”

Of Romelu Lukaku, Altobelli said that “Lukaku has not yet reached the levels of the player we’re familiar with.”

“He left, and then since he returned we haven’t seen the real Romelu.”

“Of course, a goal in the derby could change the course of what’s been a lacklustre season so far,” Altobelli noted.
