Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez are the right two players to lead the line for the Nerazzurri in the Milan derby this weekend.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, the former defender argued that, whilst Romelu Lukaku had shown his quality against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia, Dzeko and Martinez would be the reliable pairing to face AC Milan on Sunday.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi could have a tough decision to make as far as his attack against Milan, although it will be the kind of choice that coaches are happy to have to make.

Martinez’s form since the return from the winter break has been good enough that the Argentine is almost certain to start, whilst Dzeko has also been playing very well from January onwards, including a man of the match performance against the Rossoneri in the Supercoppa Italiana.

Meanwhile, Lukaku has continued to struggle with injuries and fitness problems as he has for much of the season, but the Belgian’s performance against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday was enough to suggest that his best form may be just around the corner.

Asked whether he would start Lukaku or Dzeko, Bergomi replied “Absolutely Dzeko, he has an understanding with Lautaro that has been growing for a season and a half now.”

“Lukaku is still some way off his best, even if we did see glimpses of the player he was at his best against Atalanta.”

“The derby is a match unlike any other,” Bergomi noted, “it’s a match where you absolutely cannot accept defeat.”

“Quite often it’s the team that has the greater motivation who goes on to win it,” he added.
