Legnedary former Inter striker Sandro Mazzola believes that current Nerazzurri player Lautaro Martinez would have the quality to play for one of the greatest Inter teams in the club’s history.

Speaking to Italian news outlet Il Sussidario, via FCInterNews, the former striker praised Martinez as a top-class striker, not just within the modern game, but in historical terms as well.

Martinez has grown into one of Inter’s key players over the past few seasons since he joined the Nerazzurri from Racing Club in the summer of 2018.

The Argentine is currently the team’s top scorer across all competitions, having also finished last season with the most goals in the team.

Moreover, Martinez’s form in the past month since the team returned from the winter break has been blistering, and he could very well be hoping to head into the Milan derby this evening hoping to be the player who makes the difference for the Nerazzurri.

“Lautaro is a great striker,” Mazzola said, “he always manages to come up with something during the match, he scores exceptional goals.”

“He could really be the player who decides this derby match for Inter,” the former striker continued.

“He could have played for Grande Inter, perhaps alongside Mazzola,” he suggested.

Mazzola also gave his prediction for the derby this evening, stating that “The Milan derby is always a match in itself, we don’t know how it will end, maybe right now it looks like Milan are in crisis and Inter are in better form, but let’s see what happens on the pitch.”
