Inter have gone from a team who virtually couldn’t buy a win against direct rivals in the table earlier in the season to a team who have made doing so their main strength.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, who note that the Nerazzurri have been on a run of impressive victories against Serie A’s biggest sides after a miserable string of defeats earlier on in the season.

Over the first half of the campaign, Inter rarely had too much trouble taking points from matches against teams lower down in the table, but losses to the likes of Lazio, AC Milan, Roma, and Juventus suggested that there was something missing in how they approached the head-to-head matches.

The Nerazzurri’s final match before the World Cup break was an emphatic win over Atalanta, however, giving them some hope for the rest of the season.

Inter have duly followed this up since the return from the World Cup winter break, with their very first match back a statement victory against league leaders Napoli at the San Siro.

Wins against the likes of AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana and Atalanta in the Coppa Italia have further solidifed the impression that Inter have become something of a “big match” team.

Against their city rivals in the third derby meeting of the season this evening, Inter will have the opportunity to further solidify this impression.
