Legendary former Inter, Roma, Real Madrid, and Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano feels that, on present evidence, current Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi is nowhere near being the level of coach that Napoli’s Luciano Spalletti is.
Speaking on Christian Vieri’s Twitch channel, via FCInterNews, the former forward left no doubts regarding his comparative assessments between the two coaches.
Spalletti looks set to finally put his “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” reputation within Italian football this season, and will likely do so in emphatic fashion.
Over a long career, the coach has managed to finish second in the table on several occasions with Roma, whilst he also guided the Partenopei to third place last season.
The experienced coach also had two good seasons in charge at Inter a few seasons, even if his work has been overshadowed somewhat by the heights that the team hit under Antonio Conte who succeeded him.
Now, former Nerazzurri coach Spalletti is the man blocking current Inter boss Inzaghi from getting anywhere near the Serie A title, and in Cassano’s view, the gulf in class between the two coaches is very evident.
The former forward pulled no punches in his assessment of Inzaghi, stating that “He’s thirteen points back from Napoli with by far the strongest squad in the league along with Juve,”
“Spalletti is ten times the coach that he is,” he continued, “yesterday Inzaghi proved that he can beat Milan, but that’s nothing new.”
“He can only be saved if he wins the Champions League,” Cassano argued. “otherwise Inter will be forced to change their coach.”
“Apart from yesterday and in the Supercoppa, he has never played great games since the league resumed.”
“If I were in Inzaghi’s position and thirteen points back from Napoli, I wouldn’t be proud, I’d be a little ashamed,” he argued.
“I’d be happy with the two derby win, with the cup competition win, but being thirteen points behind a team with the sixth-highest wage bill in the league, oof.”
“Last season ended up in a disaster but they saved themselves somewhat with wins in two competitions, this time around I don’t think that winning the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa will be enough,” Cassano added.
