Legendary former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli feels that if striker Romelu Lukaku can finally hit top form for the Nerazzurri this season, it would be enough for a late push to catch up with Napoli in the Serie A title race.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the former striker suggested that Lukaku might be just the impetus that Inter need to finally wake up and start fighting for the Scudetto.

When Lukaku arrived on loan from Chelsea in the summer, the expectation was that the Belgian’s return would give Inter a big boost in attack.

However, struggles with injury and fitness problems as well as perhaps some difficulties adapting to a team that play much differently than the one which he left have meant that Lukaku has yet to really make much of an impact.

Altobelli, however, still has plenty of faith that the 29-year-old can finally get back to his best, and that this would be decisive for the Nerazzurri.

“In attack, a lot will depend on Lukaku,” the former striker said, “if the player we saw under Conte returns, then Inter won’t need anything to be in the Scudetto race right away.”

“The squad is excellent, top quality,” he continued, “Inter were my favourites to win the title at the beginning of the season, congratulations are due to Napoli for what they’re doing this season but Inzaghi still should be doing better with this team.”

“Winning the Coppa is fine, but Inter must always target the title,” he added.
