Inter will move to sign Roma defender Chris Smalling on a free transfer for next season in the extend that Stefan de Vrij does not agree a new contract.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri have the Englishman lined up as an immediate replacement for de Vrij if he chooses to leave at the end of the season.

Inter are still waiting to see what the response of de Vrij is to their offer of a two-season contract extension worth around €4 million.

Should the Dutchman decide to reject their offer, the club have a clear idea of their plan to replace him.

Smalling has yet to make a decision on whether or not to extend his own contract with Roma, but the Nerazzurri are prepared to swoop in and sign him on a free transfer from the Giallorossi if de Vrij is to reject a new deal.
