Italian journalist Michele Criscitiello believes that, while Inter CEO Beppe Marotta is undoubtedly very good at his job, he has badly blundered with the situation that has caused Milan Skriniar to leave the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, via L’Interista, Criscitiello argued that the Nerazzurri executive can only have himself to blame for failing to either sell or extend the contract of the Slovakian defender.

Inter seem to have lacked a clear plan with Skriniar’s future.

After a summer spent trying to negotiate a sale of the 27-year-old to Paris Saint-Germain, the Nerazzurri ended up deciding to keep the player.

Then, the club seemed overly optimistic that they would be able to convince the former Sampdoria defender to extend his contract despite a summer that had been filled with uncertainty.

Instead, Skriniar seemed to have grown fed up with his situation at Inter, and has not accepted the club’s contract extension offer.

Criscitiello puts the responsibility for this squarely at the feet of Marotta, arguing that “Marotta made a real mess of the Skriniar negotiation.”

“He remains a great director, he hasn’t made too many mistakes in his career, but on this occasion he failed.”

“They took too long to address the issue of his contract extension,” Criscitiello argued.

“You need to be able to criticize even the absolutely top directors,” he added. “In this case, he was in the wrong.”
