Inter would have been far closer to Serie A league leaders Napoli had they committed to signing Paulo Dybala as a free agent from Juventus, according to Italian journalist Ivan Zazzaroni.

After failing to reach an agreement on a new contract with the Bianconeri, Argentina forward Dybala was in lengthy talks with Inter in the summer, but the club were unable to secure him and he subsequently joined Roma instead.

Speaking on Italian radio station Radio Deejay earlier today, and as reported by FCInter1908.it, Corriere dello Sport journalist Zazzaroni praised Inter’s Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez, but felt that the addition of Dybala would have helped close the 13 point gap to Napoli at the summit of the table.

“I’ve always liked Lautaro a lot, he puts everything into it, he can use his right and left foot and is acrobatic,” Zazzaroni declared.

“When he is in form like now, after winning the World Cup and with the captain’s armband, he is spectacular. He is Inter’s real strength, he is dragging them along.

“Inter are the strongest with Napoli, they threw themselves away in the first few matches: they made a few mistakes in the market, if they had taken Dybala they would have been a step away from Napoli,” he added.

Dybala has impressed at Roma under ex-Inter coach Jose Mourinho, with the former Palermo forward scoring seven goals from 15 Serie A appearances for the Giallorossi.

Martinez, meanwhile, has struck 12 times in 21 league appearances for Inter this term.
