Italian journalist Maurizio Compagnoni feels that Inter blew a real opportunity to gain some more ground in the race for top four in yesterday evening’s goalless draw away to Sampdoria in Serie A.

Speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908, the journalist stressed the significance of the Nerazzurri’s failure to widen the gap between themselves and the teams in third place in the league table.

Inter still finish this round of fixtures second in Serie A, with the three-point lead over all of Atalanta, Roma, and AC Milan nothing to scoff at and Lazio five points back.

However, this lead could have been widened more, particularly in view of the fact that the Giallorossi had already dropped points to give the Nerazzurri a real opening.

Whereas a five point gap and a boost in momentum could really put Inter on track to finish in the top four, and perhaps be the closest of a distant chasing pack to Napoli, they instead look set to keep having a real scrap for top four on their hands.

“The Scudetto race is largely over,” he argued.

“The way Napoli are playing, the advantage they have at the top, the squad they have,” he went on, “clearly anything can happen in football, but it would be just about the biggest surprise Italian football has seen if they failed to win it from here.”

“Inter wasted an opportunity to extend their lead on third place,” he continued, “three points isn’t all that much, and it will be a great fight.”

“Inter wasted a great opportunity,” he continued, “Milan won against Torino, Inter’s failure to win as well as Roma’s, it looks like everyone is in it.”
