Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is planning to use Marcelo Brozovic in the deepest role in midfield so that he can get the best out of Hakan Calhanoglu in the final third.
This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that one of the coach’s main ideas to get the team back on track over the remainder of the season is to switch back to the first-choice midfield from last season on a regular basis.
In Brozovic’s absence through injury for a significant chunk of this season, Calhanoglu has become the first-choice regista in Inter’s midfield trio.
The new-look midfield with the Turk playing in the holding role and Nicolo Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan either side of him has fared well for much of the period.
However, the team did look stale playing with that trio from the start against Sampdoria.
According to the Gazzetta, Inzaghi has no intention of making radical changes to the team to try and give them a jolt, but he does intend to reinstall Brozovic in the deepest role in midfield on a regular basis.
Part of the motivation for this would simply be the Croat’s quality in that position, where he gives the team something a bit different than Calhanoglu.
In addition, however, the coach also wants to get Calhanoglu playing higher up the pitch where he can use his quality to help unpick defenses like the Sampdoria backline which held firm in Monday’s disappointing draw.
