Italian journalist Xavier Jacobelli believes that the criticism that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has faced over his team’s draw against Sampdoria has been far too harsh.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, via FCInterNews, the journalist gave the view that the Nerazzurri remains a top-level coach whose achievements with the Nerazzurri should be lauded, even with stumbles such as the match against the Blucerchiati.
Inzaghi has faced some criticism throughout his time as Nerazzurri coach, although the harsher judgments against him have tended to be balanced by praise for the more positive aspects of his work at the club.
The criticism of the match against Sampdoria has focused around the idea that the team are complacent against “smaller” teams, and that they cannot sustain the best form that they’ve shown in theoretically more challenging matches.
The idea is that Inzaghi can only take Inter so far but that he struggles to get the team performing consistently over a full season.
For his part, however, Jacobelli feels that this is far too harsh on the Nerazzurri coach, who deserves more credit than he is given.
“This team certainly lacks continuity, but we must look at the path Inzaghi has taken Inter on as a whole,” he said.
“He inherited a weighty legacy from Conte, and he’s gone on to win a Coppa Italia, two Supceroppa Italiana trophies, he’s in the semifinals of the Coppa this season and in the round of sixteen of the Champions League,” the journalist noted.
“One draw against a very brave Sampdoria side isn’t enough to judge him,” he added, “it has to wait until the end of the season to give an objective analysis of the job that a coach has done.”
“Inzaghi remains one of the best Italian coaches,” he argued.
