Roma are confident that they will be able to convince Inter-linked defender Chris Smalling to extend his contract past the end of the current season.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, who reported yesterday evening that the Giallorossi are waiting for the Englishman’s response to their offer and are increasingly optimistic, whilst the Nerazzurri wait to see if he will be available in the summer.

Smalling has yet to give a response to Roma’s offer of a new two-year deal, with the former Manchester United player free to leave at the end of the current season when his deal runs out at the end of June if he declines.

The 33-year-old is a target for Inter on a free transfer in the event that one of Stefan de Vrij or Francesco Acerbi leave in the summer.

However, according to Sky, it could be the case that Smalling is not available this summer given that Roma feel optimistic that he will decide to stay.
