Italian journalist Fabio Caressa feels that the flare-up between Inter striker Romelu Lukaku and midfielder Nicolo Barella during Monday evening’s Serie A draw with Sampdoria suggests something about the leadership of coach Simone Inzaghi.
Speaking to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.it, the journalist argued that the lack of discipline shown by the duo was in contrast to how the players conducted themselves on the pitch under the leadership of Antonio Conte.
The way that Barella and Lukaku lost their tempers with one another certainly became a distraction for the team in Monday’s match at the Marassi.
The players seemed to have frustration without an outlet, and they ended up turning it towards one another.
In some respects, it should be the coach who creates the conditions for incidents like this not to happen.
In the view of Caressa, this is certainly the case, and the journalist sees it as indicating a key difference between Inzaghi and Conte.
“In my opinion, there was a lack of calm in the locker room,” he said, “I don’t know if I’d say a lack of nerve, but the leadership is different.”
He continued that “Conte’s leadership begins with mentality, he prepares players, he gets to the heart of the matter.”
“In the end, players love playing for Conte because he gives them everything they need to play for the greater good,” Caressa argued.
“Then there’s Simone Inzaghi, who doesn’t have the leadership style of a drill sergeant.”
“I think he’s found himself in an environment that’s not as receptive to his way of communicating, and he has to change it,” the journalist suggested of Inzaghi.
