Inter could be regretting their decision to offload Alexis Sanchez in the summer transfer window given the lack of a player with the Chilean’s qualities.

This is the view of Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who contrast the 34-year-old’s renewed form at his current club Marseille whilst the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Joaquin Correa struggle to find form and fitness at the Nerazzurri.

Ultimately, the decision to let Sanchez leave was much more a matter of economic necessity than an actual choice for Inter.

The need to slash the wage bill meant that a player who was no longer central to the project on the pitch being one of the highest-paid players at the club was hardly ideal.

Accordingly, the termination of Sanchez’s contract by mutual consent with a severance payment was ultimately seen as an understandable move by the Nerazzurri.

However, now it is a player with exactly the Chilean’s traits that the team seem to be missing.

Correa is, on paper, a player who can unlock matches with a bit of dribbling, but the Argentine has been struggling badly for form amid constant injuries.

Meanwhile, Lukaku was brought in to bolster the attack, and on even higher wages than Sanchez to boot.

However, the Belgian could hardly be said to have been in form at any point during the season, even now that he is fit and available.

Meanwhile, things are going quite well for Sanchez at Marseille, where the Chilean looks to have had his confidence renewed by former Hellas Verona and Udinese coach Igor Tudor.

Perhaps, the Gazzetta suggests, Inter will be looking at Sanchez and wonder whether, even with the economic motivation to part company in the summer, they perhaps made the wrong decision.
