Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that, even though Simone Inzaghi has faced a lot of criticism as Nerazzurri coach, he is still the right man for the coach.

Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, the former defender also argued that giving the captain’s armband from Milan Skriniar to Lautaro Martinez has been the right decision considering the circumstances around the team.

Inzaghi has always faced at least some measure of criticism during his time as Inter coach, although the 46-year-old has possibly never seen the level of doubt around him as has arisen following the team’s goalless draw against Sampdoria on Monday.

There have been questions asked about whether or not the former Lazio coach can get the team playing with the right attitude and approach based on that disappointing result away in Liguria.

“Inzaghi still has the team on a great path,” Bergomi said of the coach’s work, “he inherited a team that had won the Scudetto, but lost key players in the process.”

The former defender noted of Inzaghi that “He brought the team two trophies, and was in the title race in his first season, now he’s won the Supercoppa in his second and is once again in the Champions League knockouts.”

Bergomi stated of the draw with Sampdoria that “In Genoa, Inter took 23 shots on goal, yet it was supposed to be their fault that they drew, but it doesn’t work like that.”

“There are too many criticisms faced by this Inter,” he argued.

“Ultimately they lack the kind of dribbling in the team that would make them unpredictable and they have to build attacks to score, it’s not easy.”

“I’m in favour of Inzaghi,” Bergomi concluded.
