Inter CEO Beppe Marotta insists that the inclusion of goalkeeper Samir Handanovic in the starting line-up against Udinese shows the club’s strength in depth in that position.

Club captain Handanovic features in the Serie A match against his former team at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for his first game since October, replacing Cameroon international Andre Onana.

In an interview with Italian television broadcaster Sky Sport Italia before kick-off, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, Marotta insisted that there was nothing in the decision by coach Simone Inzaghi to rest Onana and give Handanovic an opportunity.

“There is no significance in particular regarding Handanovic, it’s right for the coach to use the two goalkeepers as he likes. The important thing is that the goal is protected,” Marotta declared.

With a Champions League clash against Porto in midweek, Marotta was adamant that the team were fully focused on navigating their way past Udinese first.

“The team is composed of a technical staff and players who are professionals. They know that every commitment must be honoured to the end and that they present difficulties.

“This game is important because we want to give continuity to our squad, racking up three points, though there are still many games left to play.”

Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu appears set for a new contract at the San Siro, but Marotta claimed that it was not only the Turkey international who was deserving of a new deal.

“Many people deserve it, but there are the evaluations of the club. We are working, Piero Ausilio is approaching the players’ agents, we will continue on this path,” he concluded.

Inter have the opportunity to move three points clear of AC Milan with victory over Udinese.
