Inter striker Romelu Lukaku admitted that it was difficult to come to terms with the loss of former teammate Christian Atsu, who was killed in the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.

Ghana international striker Atsu was found amongst the rubble of his apartment building in Antakya, where he was playing for Turkish Superlig club Antalyspor, and confirmed to have lost his life yesterday.

Lukaku played alongside Atsu at Premier League club Everton, with the attackers being teammates at Goodison Park in 2014-15 when the latter joined on loan from Chelsea.

Taking to Instagram after dedicating his goal in yesterday’s 3-1 win over Udinese to Atsu, Lukaku shared a heartfelt message alongside a photo of the pair in the dressing room at Everton, and confessed that he was finding it difficult to accept the news.

“Rest easy brother. This one is a hard one to take. It was amazing to be around you. Your humbleness and love for God. The way how you worked in training. The love you had for your family and kids. May God give all the strength to your kids and family. God bless your soul. Love you always,” Lukaku wrote.

Atsu had joined Antalyspor from Saudi Arabian club Al-Raed in 2021, having previously represented Porto, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and Malaga.
