Inter have a big opportunity to book a place for themselves in the last eight of the Champions League this season, and the benefits of doing so would be numerous.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note how if the Nerazzurri can get out of their round of sixteen tie against Porto, it would mean everything from a boost in confidence to the team to some much-needed cash in the coffers.
Inter haven’t been in the quarterfinals of the Champions League since the 2010-11 season, when they beat Bayern Munich in the round of sixteen but were duly eliminated by Schalke at the next round, as holders of the Champions League.
A return to the last eight would naturally be very well-received by the fans, who haven’t seen the team reach a stage that they feel they belong at in over a decade.
Meanwhile, for the players and coach, it would be a much-needed sign that, despite some wobbles and inconsistency this season, they are a strong team headed in the right direction.
Lastly, reaching the next round of Europe’s top competition would take Inter’s guaranteed earnings from the competition to €70 million, a huge boon considering the team’s financial situation off the pitch.
