Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi and his Porto counterpart Sergio Conceicao have tread different paths tactically speaking to arrive at this evening’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg tie.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the two former Lazio teammates have both diverged from the approach favoured by former Biancocelesti coach Sven Goran Eriksson in different ways.

Inzaghi and Conceicao were both part of the Lazio team that won the Serie A title under Eriksson in 2000.

As the Gazzetta notes, whilst both naturally took inspiration from working under the Swedish coach, neither have replicated his approach to matches.

In the case of Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi, the focus has been on a 3-5-2 formation rather than Eriksson’s customary 4-4-2, with a lot of positional fluidity, although he does share the Swede’s approach to defending from the front.

Meanwhile, Conceicao has proved to be something of a pragmatic tactical chameleon, switching between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 formations regularly based on how to best nullify opposition, rather than looking to impose a specific style of play on matches.
