Legendary former Inter President Massimo Moratti feels that Simone Inzaghi’s tenure as Nerazzurri coach has been marked by excellent performances on the biggest stage but too much inconsistency in the league.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the former President also gave his thoughts ahead of the team’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg against Porto this evening.

Inzaghi has certainly guided Inter to their share of memorable results during his season and a half as Nerazzurri coach.

This season alone, the Nerazzurri have managed to hand Napoli their only defeat in Serie A, whilst a win and a draw against Barcelona were enough to see the team progress to the Champions League “group of death.”

The coach will be hoping he can secure another big win against Porto now that the knockouts start up, following up also on wins against AC Milan and Atalanta in recent weeks.

“It was said that Conte was obsessive, but in the meantime he brought the Scudetto,” Moratti said.

“With Inzaghi the team is more free to express itself, but they have too many ups and downs.”

He noted that “There’s no doubt about his quality in the big matches, however.”

“Last season we went toe-to-toe with Liverpool, and then three months ago we knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League,” the former President continued.

Moratti noted that for this evening’s match “Porto are a tough and organized team, they don’t have the biggest names but they can frustrate anyone.”

“Maybe getting past them wouldn’t sound like a big deal, but it would be,” he went on, “and then it would be an excellent platform from which to build.”
