Atalanta and former Inter, Genoa, and Palermo coach Gian Piero feels that it was his insistence on playing with a three-man defense which got him sacked from the Nerazzurri in 2011.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, the coach defended his time as Inter coach, suggesting that he was trying to shake things up and revitalize the team but that it was the wrong environment in which to try his methods.

Gasperini has become one of the most well-regarded coaches within Italian football based on his time as Genoa coach across two spells, and especially his work in charge of Genoa since the beginning of the 2016-17 season.

However, the biggest job that the coach had ever been given, at least on paper, came when he was hired by the Nerazzurri in the summer of 2011.

Gasperini was anything but a success at Inter, but for his part, he feels that the club never gave him a proper chance, and were never interested in letting him try to seriously implement his methods.

“My intent in that team was to get them going again,” he said, “but none of the players were in form even afterwards, some struggled with injuries.”

“The reason for my sacking was the three-man defense, that was it, nothing more,” he added.
