Inter coach Simone Inzaghi feels that the incidents where players’ frustrations boiled over during this evening’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg win over Porto was nothing more than excitement and adrenaline.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the match, via FCInterNews, the coach brushed off a couple moments where the players showed their frustrations, particularly involving Edin Dzeko and Andre Onana.
Inter’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg was always likely to be an emotionally-charged affair, and so it proved to be.
Not only were there a few flashpoint incidents between the two sets of players, but there was also a heated disagreement between striker Dzeko and goalkeeper Onana.
Then, the striker did not hide his frustration when he was substituted off during the second half for Romelu Lukaku in attack.
“It’s pure adrenaline,” Inzaghi said after the match, “Dzeko was the first to run onto the pitch to embrace Lukaku after the goal.”
“Now we have to do everything we can to move past this first leg, focus on the league matches we have to come before the return leg in Porto.”
“We have confidence but we’re that we’re up against a strong opponent, they demonstrated it again today,” the coach added.
Inzaghi said that it was a “Great match, we’re happy because we played an excellent match against a team with physical and technical quality.”
“We’ll need to stay very switched-on in the second leg,” he added.
Of goalscorer Romelu Lukaku, Inzaghi said that “We know what he can give us, unfortunately he had a serious injury that kept him out for a few months, now he has to keep going like this.”
