Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi got his second half substations bang on in yesterday evening’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg against Porto, in the view of Italian media.
The coach was praised in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, for completely changing the match with his substitutions, which he did not hesitate to make when Plan A started failing to work.
Before even an hour had passed yesterday, Inzaghi decided to replace Edin Dzeko and Federico Dimarco with Romelu Lukaku and Robin Gosens.
Apart from the obvious fact that the Belgian was the eventual match-winner, both players gave the team a renewed physicality and threat in behind, getting them up the pitch and pushing back a Porto side who were starting to string passes together on the counter.
Then, the replacement of Henrikh Mkhitaryan with Marcelo Brozovic completely changed the balance in midfield.
The Croat’s crisp passing meant that Inter were able to hold onto possession when and where they needed to most, and put wind in their sails as they pushed for a late goal.
