Former Inter midfielder Borja Valero believes that the team were mentally and physically tired, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Bologna in Serie A today.

The Nerazzurri went into the match at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara off the back of a 1-0 win over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday, but struggled to make an impact against the Rossoblu and were undone by a second half Riccardo Orsolini strike.

Appearing as a pundit to cover the match for Italian television broadcaster DAZN earlier today, and as reported by FCInter1908.it, Valero offered his thoughts on why the Nerazzurri had failed to build on their midweek win, and felt that tiredness was a factor.

“The Champions League objective is difficult, they will have to fight until the end with four other teams,” the Spaniard argued.

“I think Inter are a bit tired at a psycho-physical level, we saw it immediately: Bologna entered the match much better.

“Inter are not used to us not creating dangers like today: we saw few shots, Skorupski saved little. Today we could really see a physical and mental drop: with Porto they spent a lot, it wasn’t easy to come to Bologna and it showed.”

Valero did not believe that the defeat would be too costly to Inter’s Champions League qualification hopes, but saw it as an opportunity missed to pull away from AC Milan and Roma in the battle for the top four.

“You can’t say that the Champions League is at risk, they are still second: they are in the right position, but these games make the difference, with a win you put some distance between the others.”

Valero joined Inter from Fiorentina in 2017 and scored five goals in 100 appearances before returning to the Viola in 2020.
