Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was left unimpressed with his side’s performance after they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Bologna in Serie A today.
The Nerazzurri were undone by a second half Riccardo Orsolini strike at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, leaving them trailing league leaders Napoli by 18 points.
In an interview with Italian television broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the final whistle, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, Inzaghi blamed a poor display in the first half and felt that his side had not done enough to merit the victory over the Rossoblu.
“We approached the match badly, the first half was not Inter like, insufficient against a strong team,” the former Lazio coach claimed.
“Then once we took the measures, creating chances, we suffered less but we conceded a goal that we can’t allow ourselves to concede. We are angry: we have injuries and there’s some tiredness, but we had to do more.”
Inzaghi was questioned for his decision to persist with a 3-5-2 formation against teams who employ wingers, but suggested that the loss was down to a poor approach to the match.
“I repeat: the first half was not good enough, Bologna like to play on the ‘inside’, but it was a strategy to bring their full-backs out to take away their ability to get inside the pitch.
“If Dzeko or Calhanoglu had scored we would have talked about something else, but we must go beyond the result and do more on the road.
“I miss being able to keep our concentration and determination every two and a half days. We play a lot, but we have to do more and better.
“But that applies to the first half, not the second. And with more precision in front of goal we would be talking about something else. We have to understand that first half in which we put almost nothing on the pitch.”
Inter have struggled for consistency in away matches this season and Inzaghi admitted that it was a problem that the Nerazzurri had recognised.
“There’s a huge difference in points we have won away compared to the one we have at home. We talked about it ourselves, we analysed it, also because last year we did better away from the San Siro.
“We let slip the advantage we had for the Champions League qualification and now we have to be better in the remaining matches.
“You have to look to be better motivated playing every two or three days, the squad and I have to do more. It has already happened to us many times and in the first half we did not see the best Inter.”
Inter look to bounce back from the defeat when they face Lecce at home next Sunday in Serie A.
