Former Lazio, Juventus, and West Ham United striker Paolo Di Canio feels that Inter have shown problems getting themselves mentally motivated for matches.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, the former striker laid the blame for some of the Nerazzurri’s mentality issues at the feet of coach Simone Inzaghi, who he doesn’t think has done enough to push the team on in terms of motivation.

Inter faced yet another tough setback in the context of their season as they fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Bologna in Serie A yesterday.

The result was nothing worse than the team deserved after a turgid, disconnected performance.

There is no doubting the quality and experience of the players, who have proven it on numerous occasions this seasons.

However, on a rainy afternoon at the Stadio Dall’Ara, the Nerazzurri players looked like they could not find the spark to turn things around when their Plan A started to look inadequate, and for Di Canio this is to be blamed on the coach.

“Based on the statistics, there’s no doubt that Inter are the best team of the last three years,” the former striker argued.

“They’ve been the only team to exceed eighty points in each of the last three seasons, even reaching ninety in one,” he noted.

“Blame the characteristics of the players, then, but also how they’re managed,” Di Canio stressed.

“They’re certainly capable of playing good football,” he pointed out, “but something is always missing.”

Di Canio went on that “Conte won the title with a 12-point advantage, and then that vanished last season due to the team’s shortcomings.”

“The derby was very badly managed, but Inter’s fate was still in their own hands prior to their match against Bologna.”

“It’s a problem of leadership,” Di Canio argued.

“The players who come on as substitutes can never seem to change the match, whose job is it to motivate them?”
