It would be nothing less than a “nightmare” for Inter to miss out on the Champions League next season.
This is the suggestion of today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that the difference in revenue between participation in the Champions League and in the Europa League is around €50 million, and that some top names could be put up for sale accordingly.
Inter are still on track to finish in the top four in the Serie A table, but the margin for error is razor thin as Sunday’s loss to Bologna has meant that the race is very much reopened with the likes of AC Milan, Roma, Lazio, and Atalanta.
Finishing in the top four is Inter’s minimum goal for the season, something that the club has made no effort to hide.
The reason for this, the Corriere notes, concerns the enormous amount of revenue that would be missed out on if the team were to fail to qualify for Europe’s top club competition.
Even with the Champions League next season, Inter are likely to make at least one major sale during the summer, with the names of Denzel Dumfries and Marcelo Brozovic linked as the likeliest possible departure.
However, in the event that the Nerazzurri were to miss out on the competition altogether, then it could be hard for them to keep hold of even “untouchable” players like Nicolo Barella, Lautaro Martinez, and Alessandro Bastoni.
