The city of Milan could face some significant financial problems if Inter and AC Milan leave the San Siro and do not construct a new stadium in its place.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that being left with the existing stadium to manage and without the rental revenues from the teams would constitute a major headache for the city.
Inter and Milan have been making rental payments of €8.5 million per season in total to the city of Milan, which would of course no longer be coming into the city’s coffers were the clubs to move elsewhere.
Having to keep the stadium managed without these payments would be an issue for the city, who would have to face the question of what to do with the existing structure and how to draw revenues.
According to the Gazzetta, it would be much likelier that the San Siro would be used for concerts and events rather than football, but the details are yet to be worked out in any serious way.
