If Inter want to strengthen their grip on a top four spot in the Serie A table, they will have to get five key players who are currently in “crisis” back in form.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who argue that more is needed from defender Stefan de Vrij, midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, striker Edin Dzeko, and wingbacks Robin Gosens and Denzel Dumfries.
Inter’s form over the past few matches has hardly been up to the level required to really guarantee themselves a spot in the Champions League next season.
If things are to pick up, making use of the squad depth that the team has will be vital.
Defender de Vrij is one player who has not been at his best, seeing his starting role transferred to Francesco Acerbi, and Simone Inzaghi will need a consistent run of performances from the 31-year-old at some point or another.
Brozovic has been out for the majority of the season thus far with injury, whilst the signs upon his return have been somewhat mixed in terms of whether or not his best form will be seen.
Inzaghi will be hoping that the 30-year-old finally re-finds his best form in the run-in of the season.
Striker Dzeko was a key source of goals and holdup play in the first part of the season, but since the return from the winter break the Bosnian has largely been quiet.
The coach will be looking at the former Roma striker as a player who has a lot more to give than he has shown in recent matches where he is experiencing a drought in front of goal.
Lastly, on the flanks neither Gosens nor Dumfries have been first-choice for long spells this season, but both have obvious quality that could be a vital extra element for the Nerazzurri as they push for second place in Serie A.
