Milan Mayor Beppe Sala feels that, if Inter and AC Milan are keen to build a new stadium away from the San Siro, there is nothing he can do to stop them.

Speaking on his podcast on Spotify, via FCInterNews, the Mayor also stated that, despite rumours that Inter are ready to choose an area outside of the city to build in, he has not received any confirmation from the club.

The new stadium situation in the city of Milan looks to have taken a decisive turn over the past few weeks.

AC Milan seem to have finally lost patience with the mounting bureaucratic delays to the plans, and have settled on the idea of building on their own.

Meanwhile, Inter would be left having to make their own decision on what to do without their city rivals, with staying at the San Siro or finding a different location in which to build among the possibilities.

Sala outlined the situation, stating that “The story begins with the change of ownership of Inter and Milan.”

“The previous owners had had long tenures, with Berlusconi and Moratti,” he looked back.

“For the new ownership, attention to budgets has become more stringent, and a new stadium would mean increased revenues and awareness that the club can be sold more easily if it has a stadium that it owns itself, or at least approval on a project.”

“When Inter and Milan came to talk to me about the new stadium, I immediately proposed a major renovation of San Siro, being willing to sell the land,” the Mayor continued.

“They then told me very clearly that this was not an option that they would consider.”

“The process took a lot of time for technical opinions and because the clubs had asked for volumetric rights that were not compatible with municipal regulations,” he added.

“It’s true that part of the City Council, even on my political side, never wanted the new stadium, especially if it meant the sacrifice of the old one.”

“It’s also true that the clubs have not yet formally renounced their part in the process of seeking approval for a new stadium in the city of Milan, building together in place of San Siro,” Sala went on.

“That process is still in progress, but in the meantime Milan have taken a specific step,” the Mayor noted.

“Although still only informally, they’re evaluating  new area in La Maura.”

“This new idea would mean going to build on private and non-public land, and disengaging from Inter,” he noted.

“They need three weeks to study a master plan, which would only concern the stadium and Casa Milan, not other buildings.”

As for Inter, the Mayor stated that “The idea of moving to a location outside Milan has been rumoured, but I’ve not received any confirmation in this respect.”

“Nobody is kicking the clubs out of building at San Siro, but I can’t be the one to decide on their futures,” he added.

“Only one thing is certain,” Sala made clear, “the clubs don’t want to stay at the San Siro and nobody can force them to.”
