Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that midfielder Kristjan Asllani is versatile enough to play as a box-to-box midfielder, but that his real position is deeper at the base of a midfield trio.
Speaking in a press conference after the team’s 2-0 win over Lecce, as reported by FCInterNews, the coach addressed the role of the 20-year-old Albanian international among other matters, and reacted to the win over Lecce.
Asllani did not appear in Inter’s win over Lecce, with the former Empoli midfielder now having gone five matches without an appearance in a Nerazzurri shirt.
The 20-year-old has shown a few flickers this season, although he has not played very many matches over the course of the campaign thus far.
Whilst at Empoli, Asllani was often praised for his versatility, although as far as his time at Inter, Inzaghi looks to have seen him as exclusively being a deep-lying midfielder.
Asked if the 20-year-old can play as a box-to-box midfielder or mezzala, Inzaghi said that “He’s capable of it, but his best position is a deep-lying playmaker.”
“He gave us a big help whilst Brozovic was out with an injury, he has to keep going,” the coach added.
Of the win over Lecce, Inzaghi said that “We played an excellent match, we were intense for the entire ninety minutes and conceded nothing against a team who have already played some great matches against top teams.”
“I’m very happy with the mentality and focus they showed,” he added.
Asked if he felt that the team were denied any penalties in the match, Inzaghi replied that “We’ll have to look back at it, but I think the referee had a good match and showed personality, neither team got even a yellow card.”
Of what this win means after last Sunday’s loss against Bologna, the coach said that “We know how it works, there was a lot of talk after we suffered a bad loss away to Bologna.”
“We talked it over, we reacted well and we must keep going like this.”
