Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that the positive signs have been there from wingback Robin Gosens for some time down.

Speaking to DAZN after the team’s 2-0 Serie A win over Lecce, via FCInterNews, the coach stressed that the German has been doing well in training and in substitute appearances for a while now, whilst he also gave his reaction to the match.

Gosens made his second consecutive start for Inter against Lecce, and as he had done against Bologna, the 28-year-old showed that he is capable of putting in a very solid performance down the team’s left flank.

This hasn’t always been the case for the former Atalanta man, who has often struggled for form and fitness and has hardly been a regular in the starting eleven since joining last January.

However, for his part the coach feels that none of this is surprising considering the progress that he has seen from Gosens.

“He’s been impressing me for some time now with what I’ve seen from him in training and when he’s come on as a substitute,” Inzaghi said of the German.

“I’ve been linking what I’ve seen from him, he had a great match [against] Lecce just as he had against Bologna, where he was excellent.”

In terms of the team’s win over Lecce, Inzaghi said that “We played an excellent match.”

“We took the right approach and our intensity never dropped,” the coach continued.

“The team deserved this win against an opponent who have been able to cause a lot of teams problems this season.”

Inzaghi noted that “Lecce are aggressive, they mark you man-to-man, so we needed a lot of movement off the ball, and that’s exactly what we worked on in our preparations.”

“The guys did well to always remain focused,” he added.

When it was noted that striker Lautaro Martinez has emerged as a leader figure in this Inter team, Inzaghi stressed that “There are many  leaders here.”

“He has been here for several years now and he’s very important to us,” he added of Martinez.

Asked if he regrets some of the points dropped against “smaller” teams this season, the coach replied “Yes, of course, we could be better off in the league.”

“But over the past eighteen months we have also done a lot of really positive things.”

“From now until the end of the season we still have a lot of matches to go, and we have to keep doing what we did this evening,” the coach made clear.

Of striker Edin Dzeko, Inzaghi said that “He had an excellent match, and it wasn’t easy in this match.”

“But I’m always rotating in attack, and soon I’ll also have Correa back, playing every three and a half days we need everyone to contribute,” he added.

Of the performance by Denzel Dumfries, who assisted Lautaro Martinez for Inter’s second after a tough first half, the coach said that “He started off with a few missed balls, but he’s a player who’s already proven himself last season.”

“He came back from the World Cup with some fatigue, but he’s getting better and better,” the coach said of the Dutchman.
