Inter wingback Matteo Darmian feels that there are too many important matches to come for the team to rest on their laurels, but that they can still be heartened by their win over Lecce.
Speaking to InterTV following the Nerazzurri’s 2-0 win over the newly-promoted side, via FCInterNews, the 33-year-old stressed that the team must build on this momentum across the matches over the coming weeks.
Inter got back to winning ways against Lecce, an absolutely vital objective following the shock defeat away to Bologna in their last match.
Apart from the three important points, it was also necessary for the Nerazzurri to put the sense of disappointment from their loss in Emilia-Romagna last Sunday behind them, as they must rebuild their morale immediately with key matches to come across multiple competitions.
In this sense, it was mission accomplished for Darmian and his teammates against Lecce.
“We wanted to redeem ourselves following the bad defeat away to Bologna,” the 33-year-old said, “and then looking at the calendar, we have many important matches to come.”
“Let’s look positively at the future, if we approach it with the right attitude we can get what we’re going for.”
Of facing Lecce, Darmian said that “In the first meeting they managed to cause us a lot of problems, but we managed to score first and then control the match in the second half.”
“We knew the characteristics that Lecce have, we tried to restrict them,” he continued.
“They’re excellent on the counterattack, they have pacey players.”
“There had been some situations in other matches where we had paid for missed passes, but today we did better to restrict them on the counter,” Darmian said.
“Given last week’s loss and some of the other results this weekend, the three points today were a must.”
“We’re enjoying this win, but then from tomorrow onwards our focus is on Spezia.”
