Inter wingback Matteo Darmian has made clear that, despite his versatility, the position that he prefers to play in is on the right flank.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia following the team’s 2-0 win over Lecce, via FCInterNews, the 33-year-old also made clear that qualifying for next season’s edition of the Champions League is the bare minimum objective for this campaign.
Since his arrival at Inter from Parma during the summer of 2020, the Italian international has gained a reputation as something of a utility man.
The former Manchester United and Torino player has shown that he can play on both the right and the left flank, whilst he has also proven himself more than capable of playing in the back three, as he did against Lecce yesterday evening.
However, from his perspective, Darmian does not hide the fact that it is at right-wingback that he feels that he is most comfortable.
Asked about his preferred position, the 33-year-old said that “If I had to choose one, I’d say at right-wingback.”
“However, my position isn’t important, what matters is my attitude, working hard in training.”
“I always try to make myself available to the coach.”
Of the significance of Inter’s win over Lecce, Darmian said that “These are big points, but that’s true of all the points available.”
“We wanted to get back on track and bring home the three points.”
“I think we deserved the win,” he added.
Darmian stressed that “We have to try to get the kind of consistency we’ve never managed up to this point and see what we can do, Champions League qualification is the minimum.”
