SPAL President Joe Tacopina has joked that US businessman and former President of the US Donald Trump could be tempted into buying Inter purely to show that he could win trophies with the club.

Speaking on the Italian Football Podcast, the SPAL President discussed his relationship with Trump who he represents as a lawyer, noting that the former US President has some interest in sports, and that the best strategy to convince him to buy the Nerazzurri would be to challenge him.

Whilst Inter have been linked with plenty of potential buyers to take over from Suning, certainly none would be more high-profile than Trump.

The former US President, who was in office from 2017 until 2021 after winning the 2016 US federal election on the Republican ticket, has also officially begun campaigning to regain the presidency in the next US federal election in 2024.

Moreover, prior to becoming President, Trump had been not just a prominent businessman, but also famed for hosting US-based reality show “The Apprentice” and occasional guest appearances in professional wrestling promotion WWE.

In recent days there have been some media links between Trump and Inter, although it would be far too early to suggest that there is anything serious to the reports that the former President has any interest in purchasing the Nerazzurri from current owners Suning.

When asked about Trump, Tacopina said that “He likes sports, golf is much more his passion, I wouldn’t say he’s an avid soccer or calcio fan by any stretch of the imagination but he at least understands sports.”

Tacopina, who in addition to having held directorial positions at Italian football clubs Roma, Bologna, and Venezia prior to taking over at SPAL, is also a prominent lawyer in the US, based in New York City like Trump.

In his capacity as a lawyer, Tacopina has begun representing the former President.

Of his relationship with Trump, he said that “He knows that I’m here [in Italy], he actually called me once and it was when I was at the stadium, it was right after we scored a goal!”

Then, in response to the suggestion of the former President taking over at Inter as rumours have suggestions, Tacopina stated that “You know, if I challenged him and told him he’d probably never win anything at Inter, he’d probably buy them just to show me I was wrong.”
