Inter striker Lautaro Martinez will not have done his reputation for being somewhat erratic on penalty kicks with his missed effort against Spezia in yesterday evening’s Serie A loss at the Stadio Alberto Picco.

The Argentine may have scored the decisive spot kick for his national team in a shootout against the Netherlands on the way to winning the World Cup, but at club level he has missed several.

As football statistics account Opta pointed out in a tweet after the match, this puts him behind only Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in terms of missed efforts from the penalty spot among players in Europe’s top five leagues.

They tweeted, “4 – Lautaro Martinez has missed four of his eight penalties taken since 2021/22 – in the Big-5 European Leagues only Karim Benzema (5/17) has missed more. Waste.
